Saying Goodbye to the Work You Love: How can therapists approach retirement and shift their professional identity to make space for what comes next?

A huge cohort of therapists, primarily women, are approaching retirement age. Retiring as a psychotherapist is complex, involving considerations that other professions don’t face. The impact of dealing with multiple losses – from the deep attachment of client relationships, to one’s professional identity, and letting go of the ties to peer collegiality – must be addressed in order for a therapist to retire well.

If you are among the 60,000 + therapists moving toward retirement age, you may find yourself wondering: When is the right time to leave my practice? How will I feel about letting it go? Identify the gains and benefits from a retirement tailored for your situation, to make the most of the next stage of life and move forward.

Learning Objectives:

Specify the significant and unique challenges that retirement poses for you as a therapist.
Determine how your professional identity affects your retirement including how it may affect choices for when and how to leave.
Prepare a ‘retirement identity’ to help ease your transition.
Utilize a guided timeline to assess growth and success to result in a ‘career legacy report’ that recognizes the impact and value of their professional experience.
Assess the steps for closing a practice or resigning from a career position.

Lynn Grodzki, LCSW-C, MCC

Lynn Grodzki, LCSW, MCC, is one of the leading international business coaches for therapists, coaches, healers, and other helping professionals. As a licensed psychotherapist in private practice since 1988, she combined a prior business career to translate business strategies into concepts that are essential for the success of those in private practice. She is a pioneer and thought-leader in the field of practice-building and ethical commerce.

Author of six books, her best-selling Building Your Ideal Private Practice: 2nd Edition (W.W. Norton, 2015) has been considered the “bible” of private practice for two decades. She continues to break new ground with her most recent book, Therapy with a Coaching Edge. It offers a paradigm-changing model for today’s therapists, showing them how a master coach combines the leverage of a coaching approach to the wisdom and goals of psychotherapy.

Lynn is a Master Certified Coach, the highest level of certification that is awarded by the International Coach Federation. She taught new coaches as a faculty member of a large coach-training organization for two decades. Lynn is the past-President of the GWSCSW (Greater Washington Society of Clinical Social Workers), and a former VP of the National Association of Social Workers, Metro Chapter. She has been a popular presenter at therapy conferences, universities, and for PESI, the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium and other venues in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia for over 30 years.

Lynn is a member of the Cosmos Club of Washington DC, nominated as a Distinguished Social Worker. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Social Work Masters Program (MSW, 1988.)

Margaret Wehrenberg, PsyD

Dr. Wehrenberg contributes articles to the award-winning Psychotherapy Networker magazine and she blogs on depression for Psychology Today. Audio and DVD versions of her trainings are available for obtaining CEU’s. She has written 7 books on topics of anxiety and depression published by W.W. Norton, and a workbook, Stress Solutions, published by PESI. The 10 Best-Ever Anxiety Management Techniques and its accompanying workbook, consistent best-sellers, were released in revised editions in 2018.
