Todd Pressman, PhD
Dr. Pressman is a clinical psychologist, award-winning speaker and international seminar leader. He graduated with degrees in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and Saybrook University. His many publications include the newly released Deconstructing Anxiety (Rowman and Littlefield), which was voted one of the top 15 books on anxiety by “Choosing Therapy”, and has received high acclaim from Ron Siegel, Stanley Krippner, Ken Wilber, Norm Shealy and others. With a background deeply rooted in tradition (he was groomed by a father whose teachers were taught by Sigmund Freud), he has integrated his cross-cultural perspective into a new program of psychological development called “Deconstructing Anxiety”. His working model is based on Michelangelo’s ideal: to release the statue from the stone, the authentic self from the overlays of imposed identity, in the pursuit of freedom and fulfillment.

Understanding Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, OCD and PTSD: A New Model
The Deconstructing Anxiety model has been gaining significant attention as a highly effective approach to understanding and treating anxiety disorders. In this seminar, Todd Pressman, Ph.D., founder of the model, will go into depth with the theory and practices of “Deconstructing Anxiety,” demonstrating their application to a variety of anxiety disorders…including PTSD, OCD, Social Anxiety and more. He will explore the origins of anxiety, both in the individual and in the evolution of humanity, outlining the ways in which anxiety adapts to different situations, manifesting as the various anxiety disorders.
As a holistic model, Deconstructing Anxiety posits a “core fear” and “chief defense” at the root not only of anxiety, but of suffering in general. By understanding the five core fears—abandonment, loss of identity, loss of meaning, loss of purpose and fear of death–we may help our clients gain insight into the true source of their anxiety disorders and define a pathway for resolution. Because these core fears are fundamental to all anxiety disorders, we will see how they can be applied to diverse populations. Come prepared for a rich exploration of the nature and mechanism of anxiety disorders, based on a model which has been hailed as “a whole new perspective on anxiety”, “one of the most exciting things I’ve come across in a long time” and “truly profound…this is worth the world’s attention”.
1) Describe the core fear/chief defense model of how anxiety disorders are created.
2) Demonstrate the principle of “doing the opposite” of the chief defense with exercises for exposure to the core fear.
3) Utilize the technique for transforming the 5 core fears into the 5 ingredients for fulfillment.
