EMDR Up-Close: Subtleties of Trauma Processing

This session focuses on many of the concepts and techniques that are usually overlooked in an EMDR basic training. As presented, these techniques will be understandable and useful to therapists who have not been EMDR-trained as well as those who have. The process of case conceptualization will be explained in clear terms so that participants will know what memories (targets) should be strategically the first to process and in what order to process other disturbing memories. Videos will be used to demonstrate techniques for identifying underlying earlier events that play a role in current upsets, finding the foundational memories that result in current psychological triggers, and eliminating those triggers. In addition the presentation will include a brief introduction to the Flash Technique, an evidence-based technique that permits trauma to be processed extremely rapidly and with little upset to the client. Video illustrations of the use of the Flash Technique will be shown, and participants will be guided through a simple group exercise in which they can experience first-hand how the Flash Technique works.

Learning Objectives:

List three important topics not usually included in an EMDR Basic Training.
Explain how to choose the memory that should be processed first after taking a client trauma-informed history.
Describe five steps to conducting the flash technique.

Philip Manfield, Ph.D.

Dr. Manfield has been licensed as a marriage and family therapist since 1975. He has authored or edited five books about psychotherapy and the use of EMDR. An international trainer, he has taught in the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. In January, 2001, he was honored to be featured in the book, “3 Minute Consultations with America’s Greatest Psychotherapists” (Jason Aronson, Publishers). He is currently Northern California Regional Coordinator for the EMDR International Association.
