Dharma and Mindfulness in Work with Highly Traumatized Clients

Although all forms of trauma can be harmful and produce enduring distress, especially deleterious are events such as acute sexual and physical assault, burns, witnessed violent death of a loved one, sexual exploitation, and extended childhood abuse and neglect. In such cases, treatment methods and processes must be especially informed by the modern treatment literature, with significant attention to safety, support, cognitive reappraisal, and, when indicated, titrated exposure to trauma memories. In this workshop, Dr. Briere will call upon his recent and upcoming work, as well as extensive clinical experience to outline current state-of-the art interventions for severe trauma. He will also focus on the insights of Buddhist psychology (dharma), mindfulness, and compassion that can increase the effectiveness of trauma treatment and provide meaning, growth, and resilience for the trauma therapist.

Learning objectives:

List the major impacts of severe trauma and child maltreatment
Describe current approaches to treating severe trauma
Outline a Buddhist perspective on pain versus suffering as it informs trauma treatment
Describe ways that existential awareness and mindfulness can assist the therapist with countertransference and burnout, as well as imbuing the work with meaning and opportunities for growth.

John Briere, Ph.D.

John Briere, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He has spent decades treating and researching the effects of extended childhood maltreatment, sexual and physical assaults, torture, and severe burns. A past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, Dr., Briere is recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association and the William N. Friedrich Lecturer: Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Child Psychology from the Mayo Clinic. He is author or co-author of over 140 articles and chapters, 15 books, and 9 trauma-related psychological tests, and has been Remote Faculty at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy since 2013. His 2019 book with Guilford Press is Treating risky and compulsive behavior in trauma survivors. His website address is johnbriere.com.
