New Developments in the Treatment of PTSD and Co-Occurring Disorders: Ways to Bolster Resilience Across the Life-Span

In the aftermath of traumatic and victimizing experiences, most individuals are affected, but some 75% go onto evidence of resilience and the ability to handle ongoing stressors.

This workshop will consider what distinguishes this group of resilient individuals from the 25 % who develop PTSD and co-occurring disorders and the treatment implications.

I will discuss how to implement the Core Psychotherapy tasks that characterize ” expert ” therapists. Some 25 % of therapists get 50% better treatment outcomes and have 50% fewer dropouts. I will discuss how these therapists bolster resilience in their patients across the life-span. I will highlight a constructive narrative perspective and note ways to spot HYPE in the field of psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss what distinguishes the 25% of individuals who develop PTSD and related disorders in the aftermath of traumatic events VERSUS the 75% of similarly exposed individuals who evidence resilience and consider the assessment and treatment implications.
Implement the Core Tasks of Psychotherapy that characterize “expert” therapists.
Bolster resilience across the life-span including “high risk” children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.
Bolster patient resilience using physical, interpersonal, emotional, behavioral, cognitive and spiritual domains.

Donald Meichenbaum, PhD

Dr. Meichenbaum has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Clinical Division of the American Psychological Association. He was the Honorary President of the Canadian Psychological Association. He has presented in all of the Canadian Provinces, in all 50 U.S. states, and internationally. He has published extensively and has authored several books including Roadmap to resilience that he has made available as a website for FREE (Please visit roadmaptoresilience.wordpress.com). His most recent article ” How to spot HYPE in the field of psychotherapy ” was chosen the best article in the filed of psychotherapy. His latest book “Treating individuals with addiction disorders: A strengths-based workbook for patients and clinicians” is being published by Routledge Press. He celebrated his 80th birthday publishing “The evolution of cognitive behavior therapy: A personal and professional journey with Don Meichenbaum” (Routledge Press).
