Overcoming Self-Doubt & Shame: The Mindfulness Cure for the Narcissism Epidemic

What if our therapeutic goals of improving self-esteem, developing a stable and coherent sense of self, and expressing our authentic feelings all turn out to be misguided? What if they inadvertently feed the cultural enthusiasm for celebrity and success that makes so many of us miserable? This presentation will examine how mindfulness practices can be harnessed in psychotherapy to reexamine our conventional sense of self, leading both us and our clients toward greater well-being, wisdom, and compassion.

Describe how seeking good self-esteem leads to psychological distress.
Identify tools to help clients act more skillfully and freely by becoming less concerned with narcissistic concerns.
Describe how mindfulness practices help clients to integrate disavowed or split-off aspects of our experience.

Mindfulness for Anxiety and Depression

Mindfulness is being touted lately as the cure for everything that ails us as human beings. How can a simple set of practices possibly help with so many psychological disorders? This presentation will examine the common factors in psychological difficulties, and explore how mindfulness practices can help us with two of the most common: anxiety and depression.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the common elements in anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders.
Describe the use of “stepping into fear” and related mindfulness practices to work with anxiety.
Describe the use of mindfulness to enhance and enliven moment-to-moment experience, thereby challenging depressive postures.

Post Pandemic: Treatment Strategies to effectively Address Anxiety, Depression, and Addiction

While the pandemic has been a global event that has had an unimaginable impact on everyone’s life, not everyone has had the same pandemic experience. In some cases, the pandemic has been a source of trauma resulting in social anxiety and depression. This workshop will provide insight into the lives of professionals who provided clinical therapy pre, during, and post-covid to patients with Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health issues. With the use of panel interviews, participants will hear testimony from mental health professionals and patients, to better understand the trauma and see through their eyes the effect, the isolation, and sudden onset of the pandemic had on their lives.

Learning Objectives:

Gain insight and knowledge on re-examining the clinical process with bringing clients back to face-to-face counseling.
Have a greater understanding of addressing clients’ anxiety better around the post-pandemic world to determine strategies for safely re-opening from virtual to in-person.
Be prepared to assist clients’ and employees’ attitudes and perceptions toward integrating back into the workplace and clinical practice post-pandemic following the impact of trauma during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Gain insight into trauma individuals experienced due to the isolation and the struggles with integrating back into society with/without vaccinations and masks.

Effective Techniques for Dealing with Highly Resistant Clients

The successful management of resistance is the pivotal point of effective therapy. It is also a critical component in alleviating therapists’ stress. Although most therapists have been trained extensively in theoretical approaches, few have had extensive training in dealing with resistance. This session will review many aspects of therapeutic resistance including historic definitions and present a model for resistance that empowers therapists in managing the problem. This is followed by fundamental principles and techniques for avoiding and resolving resistance. The techniques presented are applicable across a wide array of clients and problems and can be integrated with all theoretical approaches.

Learning Objectives:

Differentiate between conventional and modern definitions of resistance. Participants will be able to conceptualize resistance in a manner that empowers them to avoid, circumvent, and utilize it for client benefit.
Learn about how early neglect and abuse can affect later stress potential
Examine how epigenetic processes underlie cortisol receptor development

Ronald D. Siegel, PsyD

Dr. Ronald D. Siegel is an Assistant Professor of Psychology, part time, at Harvard Medical School, where he has taught for over 35 years. He is a long time student of mindfulness meditation and serves on the Board of Directors and faculty of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy. He teaches internationally about the application of mindfulness practice in psychotherapy and other fields, and maintains a private clinical practice in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

Dr. Siegel is coeditor of the critically acclaimed text, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, 2nd Edition; author of a comprehensive guide for general audiences, The Mindfulness Solution: Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems; coeditor of Wisdom and Compassion in Psychotherapy; coauthor of the professional guide Sitting Together: Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy; coauthor of the self-treatment guide Back Sense, which integrates Western and Eastern approaches for treating chronic back pain; and professor for The Science of Mindfulness: A Research-Based Path to Well-Being produced by The Great Courses. He is also a regular contributor to other professional publications, and is co-director of the annual Harvard Medical School Conference on Meditation and Psychotherapy.

Stephenie Teague, M.S. LSW

Stephenie is an Illinois native but spent most of her life in California, where most of her work focused on substance use disorders, mental health, and behavior disorders. She has an extensive history of developing curriculum and programs for adolescents and adults with co-occurring substance use, mental health, and behavior disorders.

Currently, Stephenie is Executive Director at Gateway Foundation Carbondale. She serves as a member of the Williamson County Drug Court, advocating for substance use treatment for clients through judicially supervised, therapeutic court, that ensures accountability and recovery. Early on, Stephenie pursued her Illinois Certified Alcohol and Drug Certification, California Community Care Licensing credential, and Instructor Trainer for Health and Safety Institute. She is also a board-certified International Problem Gambling Counselor and Co-Occurring Disorder Professional. She has extensive training with NAMI, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Applied Behavior Analysis.

Her passion is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities by offering the opportunity and skills for a better life.

Clifton Mitchell, PhD

Clifton Mitchell Ph.D. is an international clinical trainer and keynote speaker who has a love for teaching and over 30 years of training experience. He delivers practical information in a uniquely entertaining, fast-paced style that is filled with humor and illuminating examples. In his latest book, Priming: Programming the Mind for Habit Change and Success, he teaches a scientifically-based system for partnering with the subconscious to eliminate bad habits and create success-advancing behaviors. He also demonstrates how to use priming to radically intensify therapeutic communications and improve outcomes.

For over 20 years, he has studied and presented seminars on methods for dealing with resistance in therapy. In his book, Effective Techniques for Dealing with Highly Resistant Clients, he presents cutting-edge approaches for managing psychological resistance. He has also trained thousands of mental health professionals in the management of difficult, perplexing legal and ethical issues and his latest training is in an entertaining, dynamic game show format.

He is a contributing author in therapy books and published in numerous professional journals including the Psychotherapy Networker, Psychotherapy in Australia, Journal of Personality Assessment, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Psychology and Education, Journal of Psychological Type, The Professional School Counselor, Sober World, Counselor, Vistas, and The Advocate. His research includes investigations of therapeutic resistance, legal and ethical issues, subliminal message tapes, stress and coping, PMS, and personality types. His ideas and writings have also been published in Men’s Health Today and Barron’s Financial Weekly. Dr. Mitchell is currently a Professor Emeritus at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN, where he was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2002.
