Session 1: Re-discovering Hypnosis Again for the First Time: The Utilization of Attentional Processes in Short-Term Psychotherapies

The field of hypnosis has moved to the forefront of objective research in striving to understand subjective experience. Many therapists appreciate mindfulness which is often described as “attention without intention.” The powerful and most relevant question to ask, then, is this: How does focusing WITH intention give rise to even more successful clinical interventions? High quality neuroscientific research into changes in the way the brain and mind interact during hypnosis offer compelling evidence that there is much more to clinical hypnosis than meets the eye. In this dynamic webinar, we will explore how focused attention and well-structured suggestions can give rise to dramatic shifts in perception. These shifts can facilitate adaptive cognitive and emotional processes and thereby enhance psychological well-being and can even produce responses as dramatic as hypnotic anesthesia that makes surgery without a chemical anesthetic possible. Can you imagine what it does to someone’s view of themselves when they discover through hypnosis resources they didn’t even know they had? The use of hypnosis – the power of words to heal – can empower people in multi-dimensional ways and truly should be something each therapist takes the time to learn. The empirical evidence for the merits of hypnosis provides a strong basis for appreciating the clinical benefits you can obtain when conducting hypnotically based psychotherapy.

Session 2: Process-Oriented Hypnosis: Being General Deliberately to Produce Specific Results

As advances are made in better understanding the power of focus in shaping one’s subjective perceptions and even one’s physiology, the field of clinical hypnosis has played an especially important role in this ongoing process of discovery. Despite too many clinicians’ terribly misinformed dismissal of hypnosis as little more than a gimmick, in fact hypnosis has evolved a strong scientific basis arising from its insights into neuroscience, cognition, suggestive language and information processing, placebo and nocebo responses, the therapeutic alliance, and more.Just as there are many different models of psychotherapy, each with different foundational philosophies and methods, there are many different models of hypnosis, each with a different emphasis and utilizing different approaches. The highly innovative work of Milton Erickson in particular is widely acknowledged by therapists who may or may not use hypnosis but are definitely influenced by his strategic methods. Milton Erickson was often credited with being a “mind-reader,” but he simply said he was more observant than most. Realistically, there are many common denominators of human experience that can make one seem a mind reader to a client when touching on them in the course of therapy. Hypnosis can be especially well used to address generalities that can have very specific effects. In this presentation, we’ll explore this gentle style of process-oriented hypnotic intervention. The emphasis will be on targeting the structural components of problems rather than their content. This means striving to understand how the client generates their symptomatic experience rather than attempting to explain why.

Learning Objectives:

To describe and discuss recent studies on the role of over-general cognitive style in symptom formation and treatment response.
To demonstrate how general language can generate specific effects in the listener, a process amplified during the experience of hypnosis.
To list and describe the key components of a “process-oriented hypnosis” and their integration into strategic outcome-oriented psychotherapies.

Michael Yapko, Ph.D.

Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist residing in Southern California. He is internationally recognized for his work in advancing clinical hypnosis and outcome-focused psychotherapy, routinely teaching to professional audiences all over the world. To date, he has been invited to present his ideas and methods to colleagues in more than 30 countries across six continents, and all over the United States. His presentations are well known for being practical as well as enjoyable. Dr. Yapko has had a special interest for more than four decades in the intricacies of brief therapy, and the clinical applications of hypnosis and directive methods. He is the author of 16 books and editor of three others, as well as numerous book chapters and articles on the subjects of hypnosis and the use of strategic psychotherapies.

Dr. Yapko is the author of the leading text in the field of hypnosis called Trancework: An Introduction to the Practice of Clinical Hypnosis, now in its 5^th edition. This will be a foundation for his first webinar. His newest book, Process-Oriented Hypnosis: Focusing on the Forest, Not the Trees (W.W. Norton, 2021), is the subject of his second presentation. It was awarded the Arthur Shapiro Award for being the “Best Book on Hypnosis in 2021” by the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. His other books include Taking Hypnosis to the Next Level, The Discriminating Therapist, and Mindfulness and Hypnosis: The Power of Suggestion to Transform Experience. Erickson Foundation.
