Fear, Skepticism, Lassitude: The Recovery of an Inner Life

Resistance is always in due proportion to the anxiety generated by some invitation or challenge. Inside of each of us is continuing civil conflict, and typically our protective instincts are easily intimidated by the magnitude of the tasks life brings us. Moreover, we are often flooded with skepticism regarding our inherent resources for the trial, and an internal aversion to the struggle. These engagements, these battles of outer and inner worlds, are only resolved when we are led to a change of attitude, a riskier but more considered intent, and a consistent, daily showing up to tilt the balance between regression and progression.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn the chief obstacles to our client’s moving forward in therapy

2. Consider how the recovery of a personal authority is central to the conduct of the second half of life.

3. Differentiate the role of consciousness in tilting the balance in the client’s regression versus progression.

Necessary Fictions: Therapy as the Critique of "Stories"

We are creatures who need to understand, at any cost. And so we “story” our experiences, and those stories, provisional, localized, and often created at an early stage of our history, become defining narratives. The disarray of our histories nevertheless can be a powerful clue to the “meta-stories” to which we have been in service for many years. Therapy can be understood as the identification of and critical analysis of our operative or “meta-stories.” Until these “narrative interpretations” can be smoked out, we remain their captive. In a series of questions, we will be invited to examine the stories we have been serving, and then engage stories that honor what wants to unfold from within us.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn why we create “stories” to explain our lives, and then get trapped by our stories.

2. Differentiate the “story” of the complex from a “meta-story” that governs a client’s life.

3. Support the growth of a “story” larger than those generated by the client’s necessary defensive narratives

James Hollis, Ph.D

James Hollis, Ph. D., was born in Springfield, Illinois, and graduated from Manchester University in 1962 and Drew University in 1967. He taught Humanities 26 years in various colleges and universities before retraining as a Jungian analyst at the Jung Institute of Zurich, Switzerland (1977-82). He is presently a licensed Jungian analyst in private practice in Washington, D.C. He served as Executive Director of the Jung Educational Center in Houston, Texas for many years and now was Executive Director of the Jung Society of Washington until 2019, and now serves on the JSW Board of Directors. He is a retired Senior Training Analyst for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, was first Director of Training of the Philadelphia Jung Institute, and is Vice-President Emeritus of the Philemon Foundation. Additionally, he is a Professor of Jungian Studies for Saybrook University of San Francisco/Houston.

He lives with his wife Jill, an artist and retired therapist, in Washington, DC. Together they have three living children and eight grandchildren.

He is the author of nineteen books, the latest being The Broken Mirror: Refracted Visions of Ourselves. Other books include: Creating a Life: Finding Your Individual Path, On This Journey We Call Our Life: Living the Questions, Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life, Why Good People Do Bad Things: Understanding Our Darker Selves, Living an Examined Life: Wisdom for the Second Half of the Journey and recently released Living Between Worlds: Finding Personal Resilience in Changing Times. The latest book is, Living Between Worlds: Finding Personal Resilience in Changing Times. The books have been translated into Swedish, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Korean, Finnish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Farsi, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Serbian, and Czech.
