Session 1: Therapies & Adjunctive Therapies for Mental Health Disorders: Conventional & Non-Conventional

Crownview Psychiatric Institute is proud to present Dr. Mark Melden and Jenny Li LPCC, for this Higher Thought Institute Clinical presentation. Both individuals have been treating high-acuity mental health patients for over a decade. Working with these chronic and often mis-diagnosed/mis-understood patients in an intensive clinical and medical environment, has given them the experience and insights into effective strategies to treat and care for these men and women, in a way that produces positive outcomes.

In this session, Dr. Melden will discuss the theories that implicate different biochemical mechanisms in depression and standard treatments that currently exist along with treatments that could come to fruition in the near future but not FDA approved.

Learning Objectives:

Describe how inflammation promotes depression.
Describe how Glutamate, GABA and Astrocytes play a role in depression.
Discuss the relative roles of commercial development vs legalization in likely future availability of psychedelics to treat mental illness.

Jenny Li, LPCC, NCC

Session 2: OCD: Differential Diagnosis & Rationale for Treatment

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – more than just being clean. OCD is a debilitating disorder characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, followed by compulsive rituals that are often performed to alleviate discomfort. These rituals can be overt or non-observable (e.g., “Pure-O”). This presentation is designed to help increase awareness and debunk myths related to OCD. This CE course will present OCD and its chronic trajectory by understanding its complexities by reviewing assessment, differential diagnosis, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for OCD including case examples.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis for OCD and comorbidities.
Identify primary symptoms of OCD and “Pure-O.”
Describe OCD themes in complex presentations and identify adjunctive strategies to aid in OCD treatment.

Mark Melden, DO

Dr. Melden earned his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine at Philadelphia College Osteopathic Medicine and went to USC Presbyterian Hospital for his residency in Family Medicine. He then completed his Psychiatric residency at the University of California, Irvine and went to UCSD Geropsychiatry pursuing a fellowship. Dr. Melden has over 14 years of experience as a clinician specializing in treating child and adolescent, adult and geriatric clients. He has devoted his life to psychiatry in a variety of different treatment settings including in- patient and out-patient environments. He specializes in the psychiatric evaluation, complementary therapy approaches, and medical management of individuals suffering from mental illness. Currently, he maintains a private practice with Crownview Medical Group in Coronado and Carlsbad, California where he is CEO/President.

Dr. Melden is a dedicated medical professional who provides a spectrum of services from general care to specialized state-of-the-art treatment. He is committed to providing specialized and individualized services with a comprehensive treatment plan for each client he treats. Dr. Melden believes the optimal way to provide excellent care is through continued attention and maintenance.

Jenny Li, LPCC, NCC

Jenny Li, LPCC, NCC, is currently the Clinical Director at Crownview Psychiatric and Crownview Co-Occurring Institute. In this role, she leads a clinical team with oversight of all the clinical programs, including training and education to integrate systemic evidence-based treatment that creates meaningful change around challenging mental health presentations. Previously, she has served as an adjunct faculty at Bastyr University, providing instruction in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as Clinical Counseling Skills to doctorate-level students. Prior to this, Jenny Li worked with a pediatric eating disorder population, pediatric/adult refugee population, with severe mental illness at an inpatient hospital and co-founded a community-based mental health program in 2015. Jenny Li is a California Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and board-certified counselor by the NBCC and has a master’s in clinical Mental Health Counseling. She has also gained training in Global Health and Disaster Mental Health. Jenny Li specializes in Clinical Supervision, in treating OCD, Trauma and dual diagnosis. Jenny is certified in providing OCD treatment (Exposure Response Prevention) and is Level 1 IFS trained, with specialized training in several other modalities and interventions, including EMDR, PE, CBT, DBT, EFFT, and Transdiagnostic Unified Protocol. Prior to this, Jenny Li was living and working with underserved youth in Scandinavia, Asia and Central and South America. She speaks English, Swedish, and Mandarin.
