John Briere, Ph.D.

Treating Risky and Compulsive Behavior in Trauma Survivors

Survivors of trauma and early attachment disturbance are at elevated risk for compulsive and self-endangering behaviors, ranging from suicidality and self-injury to substance abuse, indiscriminate sexual activities, and binge eating. Many of these difficulties are typically seen as symptoms of a personality disorder, behavioral addiction, or impulse control disorder. However, emerging research indicates that they are more accurately understood as coping/homeostatic responses to triggered childhood memories and inadequate emotional regulation capacities.

Calling on his recent book (Treating risky and compulsive behavior in trauma survivors, Guilford, 2019) John Briere presents an integrated approach to self-endangering behavior with interventions such as trigger management; metacognitive awareness and emotion surfing; in vivo processing of implicit memory activations; and harm reduction.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop the participant, will be able to:

List three distress reduction behaviors (DRBs)
Describe the Reactive Avoidance model
Outline the principles of trigger management

John Briere, Ph.D.

John Briere, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He has spent decades treating and researching the effects of extended childhood maltreatment, sexual and physical assaults, torture, and severe burns. A past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, Dr., Briere is recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association and the William N. Friedrich Lecturer: Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Child Psychology from the Mayo Clinic. He is author or co-author of over 140 articles and chapters, 15 books, and 9 trauma-related psychological tests, and has been Remote Faculty at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy since 2013. His 2019 book with Guilford Press is Treating risky and compulsive behavior in trauma survivors. His website address is johnbriere.com.
