Session 1: Hypnosis and Mindfulness: The Role of Suggestion in Transforming Experience in a Focused State

Modern hypnosis and its close cousin, guided mindfulness meditations (GMMs), are two overlapping forms of experiential focusing processes increasingly being used in psychotherapy. They generally focus on the role of attentional processes in problem formation and resolution, and directly relate to patterns of cognition, mood, and behavior. The reasons why may be obvious: How well you focus and what you focus on together help shape your subjective experiences and, ultimately, your quality of life. Both mindfulness and hypnosis have been applied to a variety of clinical problems where they have successfully demonstrated the therapeutic value of teaching people ways to direct and intensify their quality of focus. Neither of these is a therapy in its own right, of course, but their capacity for improving the quality of people’s lives has received substantial empirical support as a class of meaningful interventions, particularly when embedded in a substantive therapeutic framework. What is it about hypnosis and GMMs that encourages people to discover resources in themselves they didn’t know they had and learn new therapeutic skills more easily? This presentation considers principles and methods of hypnosis and mindfulness as they apply to goal-oriented treatments in an attempt to answer that question.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize and more skillfully use the power of focus inherent in any type of therapy, especially the vehicle of mindfulness.
Use core components of mindfulness and hypnosis to increase client responsiveness and enhance treatment efficacy.
Identify specific cognitive patterns influencing treatment responsiveness and employ hypnosis and mindfulness strategies to enhance their value as therapeutic catalysts.

Session 2: Mindfulness and Hypnosis: The Shared Dynamics of Suggestion in Transforming Experience

In the second part of this webinar, the focus is entirely on clinical applications of key aspects of hypnosis and GMMs by deconstructing such processes, identifying their therapeutically relevant components, and constructing meaningful interventions by incorporating them in novel ways that serve to empower the client. Attendees will observe a therapeutic session incorporating principles and methods of both mindfulness and clinical hypnosis. A primary goal of the webinar is to encourage a greater awareness of and sensitivity to the personal and interpersonal dynamics that make these experiential interventions meaningful to people.

Recognize and use the capacity for therapeutic dissociation in treatment.
Explain focusing as a means of enhancing emotional self-regulation and self-efficacy.
Discuss the merits of hypnosis and mindfulness in clinical intervention.

Michael Yapko, Ph.D.

Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist residing in Southern California. He is internationally recognized for his work in advancing clinical hypnosis and outcome-focused psychotherapy, routinely teaching to professional audiences all over the world. To date, he has been invited to present his ideas and methods to colleagues in more than 30 countries across six continents, and all over the United States. His presentations are well known for being practical as well as enjoyable. Dr. Yapko has had a special interest for more than four decades in the intricacies of brief therapy, and the clinical applications of hypnosis and directive methods. He is the author of 16 books and editor of three others, as well as numerous book chapters and articles on the subjects of hypnosis and the use of strategic psychotherapies.

Dr. Yapko is the author of the leading text in the field of hypnosis called Trancework: An Introduction to the Practice of Clinical Hypnosis, now in its 5^th edition. This will be a foundation for his first webinar. His newest book, Process-Oriented Hypnosis: Focusing on the Forest, Not the Trees (W.W. Norton, 2021), is the subject of his second presentation. It was awarded the Arthur Shapiro Award for being the “Best Book on Hypnosis in 2021” by the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. His other books include Taking Hypnosis to the Next Level, The Discriminating Therapist, and Mindfulness and Hypnosis: The Power of Suggestion to Transform Experience. Dr. Yapko is the recipient of numerous major awards for his innovative contributions in advancing the fields of hypnosis and brief therapy, including lifetime achievement awards from The American Psychological Association’s Division 30 (Society of Psychological Hypnosis), the International Society of Hypnosis (the Pierre Janet Award), and The Milton H. Erickson Foundation.
