Session 1: If You’re Not Anxious, You’re Not Paying Attention: Anxiety Compassion, Not Cure

War, climate change, gun violence, financial fears, addiction, pandemic, isolation, suicide rates, political animosity, loss of trust in public institutions—and a 24/7 diet of all this bad news is enough to set off anxiety alarms in anyone’s brain. And we haven’t even mentioned individual stressors like concern for your health and those you love; as well as personal loss, relationship conflict, work issues, or lack of affordable housing. Anxiety is our natural alarm system; it tells us to seek shelter, be alert, and take action. We would never want to eliminate this guardian of our safety, but some of us are born with a hyper-alert emergency system that can be inconvenient at best, and debilitating at worst. This session will explore the multiple types of anxiety; most common occurrences; and research-based treatment approaches.

Session 2: Narcissism: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

Narcissists are charming, smart, sometimes brilliant, and often highly successful, and for these reasons we often tolerate the dark side of this character trait. Narcissists benefit us—until they don’t. They burn through people and projects because they never have enough. No one is secure in a relationship or in business with a narcissist. They are in constant search of more people to adore, assist, and elevate them. They envy any accomplishment of others. They cannot share the stage with others, even family members, unless they are there to make them look even better. They lack empathy and therefore are immune to the guilt of their amoral actions. While therapists rarely see narcissists coming for “narcissism recovery,” we do see those who are collateral damage. This presentation takes a serious look at etiology, social norms, and clinical implications as well as strategies for reversing this dangerous trend.

Pat Love, EdD

Pat Love, Doctor of Education and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, known for her warmth, humor and research-based wisdom has been a clinical practitioner for 40 years. Her blog posts, YouTube clips, books, trainings, workshops and online courses have made her a popular go-to relationship consultant. Her work has been featured on television through repeat appearances on Oprah, The Today Show and CNN; in cyberspace; and popular magazines–but she’s also a distinguished professor, licensed marriage and family therapist and long-standing clinical member and approved supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists. She was the first Master Trainer in Imago Relationships International and now Faculty Emeritus.

Dr. Love co-founded the Austin Family Institute, providing therapy, consultation, supervision, training and public education. She has authored/co-authored eight books; four workbooks; several online/video courses, including her new release, Wake Up in a New Marriage: Science Skills and Stories to Transform Your Relationship from Ordinary to Extraordinary, and numerous professional articles. She was most recently honored by being inducted into her alma mater West Virginia University’s College of Education and Human Services Hall of Fame. Her work has literally taken her around the world to help people understand and improve their relationships.
